Sometimes I let my heart
ride shotgun,
without a seatbelt
believed I knew how I felt,
you felt

watch for traffic,
blare some Kendrick
tap Misty ashes on the dash
and green goes red

your impact leaves me stinging,
rattled, ringing
every time, you pet my cheek
and hold me baby
take my keys and kiss me,
whisper there’s no Mary,
Molly, just me

then juggle teeth
into ignition, warm palm
on my leg creeps down
slowly, finds my toes
to press the gas
and off we go

You’re thankful now, but
someday soon I’ll learn
to buckle up
